I tried installing on a hard drive from a DVD rom in a nano-ITX system (EPIA N), but the system would boot to one dot followed by some space and then three dots and hang. So, I tried a 4.0 GB CF card. That was worse: the DVD ROM couldn't be chained as a slave off the RoHS CF dongle on the IDE port, and I lacked a 44 pin mini IDE cable, so I tried installing to the CF card off an IDE port in another box. The CF card was an RData 4.0 GB model. Well, installation proceeded better, except for the fact that the installation kernel tried to use DMA to access the CF card and timed out in boot. However, I could get around this in an F2 console window with hdparm -d 0 /dev/hda and let the installation proceed as normal, with ide=nodma as extra installation kernel boot parameters. That booted fine in the X86 PC I used, but I noted that X was not configured, and the initial run level was 3. Installing the CF card and IDE to CF dongle back in the EPIA N system left me again at a dot space three dots hang at boot. What's wrong? I also noticed that the CF card was formatted as ext3 and not ReiserFS as the documentation indicates. Is EPIA N not supported?

I had exactly the same symptoms with the dots. I loaded BIOS defaults and it started working. It seems to have something to so with serial ports.
