Hi there,

I'm using a VIA EPIA SP13000. I'm fairly new to linux, but getting better. I’m currently using MythDora 2.1 on my HTPC. It's an old version and there's some issues with it, but I’m hesitant to upgrade to their latest whopping 900+ MB install, so I wanted to try iMedia. It looks very promising.

A few problems / suggestions:

  • During install it asks whether I want i686, or C3/Eden. I chose C3 since as far as I know that's what's in the SP13000, but on boot it crashes and reboots continually. I reinstalled with i686, and it works just fine. Perhaps they should just be labeled better. It seems confusing.
  • I notice that none of the USB packages are selected by default. It seems like these might be nice to have, especially considering that the popular Hauppauge remotes use a USB receiver. Also for external drives etc...
  • Upon first boot it just dumped me at a terminal. Running the startx command gave an error about the mouse device (which I hadn't bothered plugging in), and exited. I hooked up a PS/2 mouse, rebooted, and it loaded into X just fine. I don't plan on having a mouse in my living-room though... it shouldn't really be necessary when the remote works.
  • The display resolution seems wrong for NTSC TV (composite). I can only see part of the GUI at once (it scrolls around the screen with the mouse). It should be 640x480 @ 60Hz I think? The resolution on the boot screen with the 'i' logo looks perfect. I tried to view/edit the xorg.conf file but 'vi' isn't installed. At this point my linux experience runs out :P
  • I didn't know what the root password was at first. I managed to find it on your site (4root4), but it would be nice to have it ask for a password during the install (or tell you what it is during the install). Ideally I guess nobody would need it... but for setup / tweaking it’s nice to have.
  • I notice that one has to run the mythtv-setup program manually (disable the frontend from loading automatically, and run the command). It would be nice to have mythtv-setup and then mythfilldatabase automatically run the first time you boot.
  • I'm not sure, but it seems like some of the mythtv plugins are missing. Things like DVD playback aren't in the menus (I only see VCD). I think most people will find these features useful even if it "bloats" the install somewhat. 128 Mb is so small... I wouldn't notice if it doubled :P
  • The remote doesn't work. Running 'irw' says "connect: Connection refused" which usually means the LIRC daemon has crashed. Sure enough... run lircd, check the processes, it's there. Run irw, check the processes, it's gone. Try irw again, "connect: Connection refused". I have the same problem on MythDora 2.1. I never found a solution. Hopefully you can.
  • Personally I’d like to see Samba included, so I can easily dump media onto the HTPC from my Windows machine. Perhaps include it as an option during install?

If you can fix those issues, I think you have an amazing distro on your hands. Very light-weight, but still accomplishes almost everything I need. Any word on when the next release will be?

Thanks for the comments we really appreciate them.
We're working on releasing a new version tomorow (2.6 kernel,CN700 support,DVB etc) which fixes most of the issues reported by you but we'll discuss the remaining issues after this release.
